リー (US)
WRO on Tour 2019/2020 HUMAN ASPECT
Bioses and synopsys of artist in Program WRO on Tour in Tatsuno Art Project 2019
OPERATION JANE WALK
LEONHARD M?LLNER (AT), ROBIN KLENGEL (AT)
An experimental short film based on the dystopian multiplayer shooter Tom Clancy's: The Division (Ubisoft Entertainment 2016). The game's digital war zone is appropriated with the help of an artistic operation: within the rules of the software, the militaristic environment is being re-used for a narrative city tour. The urban strollers avoid the combats whenever possible and become peaceful tourists of a digital world, which is a detailed replica of Midtown Manhattan. While walking through the post-apocalyptic city, issues such as architecture history, urbanism and the game developer's interventions into the urban fabric are being discussed.
Robin Klengel (AT), born in 1988 in Graz, lives and works as an artist, illustrator and cultural anthropologist in Vienna and Graz. He is interested in individual and collective tactics of spatial appropriation, and mechanisms of order and control of the urban as well as the digital public spaces. Klengel situates his work between art, science and socio-political involvement. He participated in various projects and publications in this field. Since 2017 he has been a vice chairman of the interdisciplinary art and culture space Forum Stadtpark.
Leonhard M?llner (AT), born 1987 in Graz, lives and works in Vienna as Visual Artist and Media Researcher. He studied Visual Art and Media Art at the UFG Linz, at the HGB Leipzig, and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Currently he writes his PHD in Practice in the field of Cultural Studies. He intervenes into the public as well as into the digital space. He has an international exhibition, screening and residency experience.
PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION
LILIANA PISKORSKA (PL)
The artist explores tensions between the notions of the public meeting and public space. She focuses on the physicality of limits circumscribing the temporary legality of a public meeting which form a dividing line between the participants and the police who protect the assembly. The synchronized police troops are in permanent, intimate, body-to-body contact, their integrity hinging on the endurance of connections which must be expressed in constant movement, shifts, and action.
Liliana Piskorska (PL), born in 1988, Doctor of Arts, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toru? (Poland). In her work, she embrace feminist-queer, anarchist-feminist, and post-humanist perspectives. With her largely analytical investment, she delves into the context and distinctive facets of the socio-cultural landscape of Poland. Her major exhibitions include the Ostrale Biennale for Contemporary Art (2017, Dresden, Germany), the November Film Festival (2018, Close-Up Film Centre, London, UK), and The Ratcatcher (Contemporary Museum, Wroc?aw, Poland, 2018). In 2017 she was a finalist of the Forecast Festival in Berlin (Germany), and in 2019 she was shortlisted for the Spojrzenia Award.
FIELD OF INFINITY
GULI SILBERSTEIN (GB)
Inspired by Italian renaissance paintings and protests of the people of Gaza at the border with Israel, the work connects classic images of human gestures and landscape views, to contemporary attraction to news images, beauty, and blood. Desire for liberation, nature rejuvenation and a young girl, merge and form a mysterious, dark and colourful audio-visual scramble.
Guli Silberstein (UK), born in 1969 in Israel, is a video artist and editor, a British citizen, based in London since 2010. He received a BA in Film from Tel-Aviv University in 1997 and a MA in Media Studies from The New School University, New York City, where he studied and lived in 1997-2002. Since 2000, Guli creates short video works widely shown and winning awards in festivals and art venues in the UK and worldwide, including showing works at: London Short Film Festival, Transmediale Berlin, Go Short in the Netherlands, JIDFF, Jihlava, Czech Republic, Festival of (In)appropriation, LA USA, New York Film Week, The National Centre of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, NE USA.
UNERASABLE IMAGES
WINNIE SOON (HK)
The artwork presents screenshots from Google Image Search results for the search term "六四" ("64"), a reference to the date of the student-led Tiananmen Square Protest in Beijing in 1989. The most iconic image of that day depicts an unknown protestor known as 'Tank Man' facing down a column of advancing tanks. This photograph is routinely censored by authorities and blocked from any search results in China. In 2013, a Lego reconstruction of the Tank Man image started circulating before it, too, was quickly erased.
Nevertheless, the image was later found beyond China, and it occasionally prioritizes on the first few rows of Google image search.
With more than 300 screenshots were taken in 2017, the project aims to create a temporal and empty networked space where the thumbnail image(s) move within the hidden infrastructural grid and beyond the screenshot's frame, examining the geopolitics of data circulation, internet censorship, the materiality of image (re)production through complex entanglement of human and nonhuman parameters.
Winnie Soon (HK/DK) is an artist-researcher based in Denmark examining the cultural implications of technologies in which computational processes and infrastructure underwrite our experiences, which are ever more programmed. Her works explore themes/concepts around computational culture, specifically concerning internet censorship, data circulation, real-time processing/liveness and the culture of code practice. Winnie's projects have been exhibited and presented internationally at museums, festivals, universities and conferences across Europe, Asia and America. Her current research focuses on aesthetic coding in the realm of software studies, working on two books titled "Aesthetic Programming: A Handbook of Software Studies" (with Geoff Cox) and "Fix My Code" (with Cornelia Sollfrank). She is Assistant Professor at Aarhus University.
BOTTLED SONGS 3 & 4
CHLO? GALIBERT-LA?N? (FR), KEVIN B. LEE (US)
A series of video letters investigating desire, power and terrorism in online and social media. The videos, recorded from the researchers' desktops, depict and interrogate their subjects' compulsive engagement in the production of everyday myths and fictions about themselves and others. Here are presented Chapters 3 and 4. "The Spokesman" investigates the online traces of John Cantlie, a British news reporter who was kidnapped and appeared in several Islamic State propaganda videos. "My Crush was a Superstar" tracks a French ISIS fighter, Abu Abdallah Guitone, through a trail of messages, videos and postings to uncover his existence in both social media and reality.
Chlo? Galibert-La?n? (FR) and Kevin B. Lee (US) are a filmmaking-research team specializing in videographic essays. Their work explores contemporary audiovisual media through online, amateur and found footage contexts in relation to the politics of authority, self-expression, and the histories and theories of cinema. In 2018 they were grantees of the Sundance Institute Art of Nonfiction Fund and artists-in-residence of the European Media Art Platform (EMAP). They have presented their works at the Austrian Film Museum, London Essay Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Ars Electronica Festival and the Impakt Festival.
